2012- 2013 METROPOLIS OF ATLANTA PHILOPTOCHOS DONATIONS AND PROJECTS
Dee Nicolaou, Metropolis President
The Metropolis of Atlanta Philoptochos, under the spiritual leadership of His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios, has sixty-six active Chapters with 3600 members across eight states. The Metropolis of Atlanta Philoptochos has distributed $256,072 in aid and philanthropy from January, 2012 through December, 2013.
The past two years have been extremely busy ones for our many chapters. Some of our highlights: We are proud that so many of our chapters participated in making donations to the national “Giving Tree” project to raise funds for our new Philoptochos Center of Philanthropy.
In addition, The Metropolis of Atlanta Philoptochos hosted an “Opening the Doors” luncheon as a fundraiser for the Center of Philanthropy. This beautiful event was held in Atlanta at the historic Druid Hills Golf Club. The proceeds from this luncheon totaled $66,013.07. It was a wonderful day and a proud moment for our Metropolis Philoptochos.
In 2009, our Metropolis Philoptochos, voted to establish the ” Build a Church in Africa” special project. Our goal was to raise $25,000 over a five year period to build a church in Cameroon, Africa. This special church will provide a religious sanctuary for individuals as they seek to find spiritual peace in a prayerful environment. Through the efforts of our dedicated chapters, we will fulfill this commitment in 2014.
Our Philoptochos mission for Youth Ministry has expanded its scope to recognize an underserved segment of our Orthodox youth: children with special needs. Our Metropolis of Atlanta Philoptochos will sponsor an Autism Family Camp for ten families at our Diakonia Retreat Center in South Carolina in the summer of 2015.
Since social and support networks are so important for families of children with special needs, we are in the process of working with health workers, social workers and other experts to make this camp a reality. This camp will be completely funded by monies from the Metropolis of Atlanta Philoptochos treasury, at no expense to the families. Our chapters have been very involved in raising money for Relief Aid to Greece and Cyprus.
Monies were sent to the National Philoptochos Office for distribution to those in need.. In addition, many chapters prepared Baby Kits, Medical Kits & Hygiene Kits that were delivered to Greece.
The members of the Metropolis of Atlanta Philoptochos strive each day to help those in need in our parishes and in our greater communities. Through God’s grace, we will always find a way to continue this great work.
